Rain gutters provide a relatively protected and sheltered environment that can attract a variety of animals and plants. The types of critters that might live in a rain gutter can vary depending on factors such as location, climate, and nearby habitats. Here are some examples of what you might find in your gutters and how to avoid unwanted guests and growths in the first place.
Insects: Insects like ants, spiders, beetles, and cockroaches might find their way into rain gutters, attracted by the moisture and organic debris. Gutters that are full of debris will be especially inviting to insects of all kinds because of the added shelter from debris.
Birds: Birds might use rain gutters as potential nesting sites, especially if the gutters are clogged with larger debris like leaves, providing a suitable sheltered space. Some gutters have a little extra roof overhang as well, making a gutter underneath more than suitable for a nest. Nests tend to float over the downspouts, causing the gutters to overflow when it rains.
Rodents: Small rodents like mice and squirrels could use gutters as pathways for movement or nesting sites. Clogged gutters can provide a hidden and cozy spot for them. Like all unwanted guests, rodents leave a big mess behind whether passing through or living in the gutters. Rodent droppings are not only nasty to deal with, but also very unhealthy to interact with during gutter cleaning.
Amphibians and Reptiles: In some cases, amphibians like frogs or small reptiles like lizards might be attracted to gutters for moisture and shelter. A few years ago, we got a complaint about a large snake living in a customer’s gutters—that was a fun one for sure! Gutters can also be a welcome spot for invertebrates such as snails, slugs, and earthworms that find gutters to be a damp and protected environment, especially if leaves and debris provide a source of food.
Plants: If gutters are clogged with soil and debris, seeds might find their way into the gutters and germinate, leading to the growth of small plants.
It's important to note that gutters are not ideal habitats for most animals, and many of them might just pass through or use them temporarily. Regular maintenance and cleaning of gutters can help prevent the accumulation of debris and discourage critters from taking up residence. If you suspect that certain critters are causing issues with your gutters or home, it's advisable to contact a pest control professional or a wildlife removal expert to address the situation properly and safely.
The best way to avoid unwanted guests in your gutters is to get them covered. Not all gutter covers are created equal, and some protection allows for things to still enter the gutters. Choosing a guard that completely encloses the gutters, while keeping all debris out and allowing for maximum water flow is ideal. Check out our Valor Gutter Guards which check all the boxes!
