Can you Clean Gutters in the Winter?

Cleaning gutters in the winter can be a bit trickier than in other seasons. The good news it is still possible during those cold months. The job is dangerous, though, if not done correctly, especially where ice dams are a concern. Here are a few tips if you decide to tackle gutter cleaning in winter:

  1. Choose a Mild Day: Pick a day when temperatures are above freezing, and there's no snow or ice buildup on your roof or in the gutters. Trying to clean gutters when it's icy can be hazardous and typically is not even possible if the ice dams are too large.
  2. Use the Right Tools: Be sure to have waterproof gloves, bags, buckets, and a good, sturdy ladder. This allows you to clean the gutters with confidence. Avoid using a ladder on icy or snow-covered surfaces. Also, avoid gutter cleaning tools and extension wands. While the concept is nice, they rarely work and are hard to use while balancing on a ladder.
  3. Remove Ice Dams: If you notice ice dams in your gutters, it's crucial to address them. Ice dams cause water to back up and potentially damage your roof and interior. Gently break up the ice, being careful not to damage the gutters. Some ice dams are too large and require the help of a company that can safely steam the ice dams away.
  4. Be Cautious: Watch out for slippery surfaces, especially if you're using a ladder. If the weather conditions are too harsh or unsafe, it's better to wait for a milder day or consider hiring a professional. Remember, the risk is not worth it. Make sure to always have someone at the base of the ladder to hold it at all times. This technique (firemen call it "bucking the dogs") is the surest way to stay safe.
  5. Check Downspouts: Ensure that downspouts are clear and direct water away from your home's foundation. Ice can also block downspouts, so make sure they are free of obstructions. Cleaning the gutters is step one, but step two is making sure those downspouts are working. The job is not done until both are done effectively.

Remember, safety should be your top priority when gutter cleaning during the winter. The same applies to winter window cleaning. If conditions are too harsh or unsafe, it might be best to wait for a more suitable time or hire a professional gutter cleaning service. Regular maintenance throughout the year can help prevent issues in winter, so you don't find yourself dealing with severe ice dams and blockages.
